More commonly known as a “tummy tuck,” abdominoplasty is a common cosmetic surgical procedure for tightening up the stomach. Excess skin and tissue are removed from around the abdomen to reveal a toned, flat tummy. A tummy tuck can also be paired with liposuction to remove excess fat deposits, a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) to enhance the derrière, or other cosmetic procedures.

This patient had an abdominoplasty with removal of 7.3 lbs of abdominal pannus and conservative liposuction of the flanks. Postoperatively, she still has some abdominal fullness, but that fullness is intra-abdominal, i.e. visceral fat that cannot be removed with liposuction because it is the fat that surrounds the organs. It can go down by losing weight. (Liposuction and abdominoplasty only remove the peripheral fat outside of the abdominal cavity.) However, she is very happy with her results and also more motivated to eat healthy and work out.

This lady had been to three prior consultations with other plastic surgeons. She wanted a mini-abdominoplasty but all three prior surgeons told her they would only do a full tummy tuck on her. I explained to her that while the textbook answer for her abdomen would be a full abdominoplasty, we can do a mini-TT as long as she understands the limitations in outcome. The mini-TT does not address the supra-umbilical (above the belly button) muscle laxity and skin laxity. Her results would be less dramatic and much more conservative. Patient’s main concern was her infra-umbilical (below the belly button) pouch when wearing skin-tight dresses. She also did not want to go through the lengthier recovery that would follow a full tummy tuck. So, we proceeded with a mini-abdominoplasty with liposuction of the abdomen and flanks. She is thrilled with her results (although you can see the laxity around the belly button).
